The Legend of Do Kwon: From Genius Teenager to the Ups and Downs of an Encryption Fugitive's Life
Do Kwon's Life: From Genius Teen to Encryption Fugitive
Do Kwon was born in 1991 and is a South Korean entrepreneur and software engineer. He displayed extraordinary talent from a young age, excelling academically and being proficient in multiple languages. In high school, Do Kwon attended Daewon Foreign Language High School in Seoul, which is one of South Korea's top private preparatory schools.
With outstanding results, Do Kwon successfully gained admission to Stanford University in the United States, where he began studying computer science. Influenced by the environment in Silicon Valley, Do Kwon developed an entrepreneurial idea. After graduating from university in 2015, he briefly worked at Apple and Microsoft, but soon returned to South Korea to found his first company, Anyfi.
Anyfi is a company that provides mobile broadband and Wi-Fi services. Do Kwon hopes to achieve the ideal of a "free interconnected world" through this company. Anyfi has achieved some success, attracting $1 million in investment. During the operation of Anyfi, Do Kwon was exposed to encryption technology and developed a strong interest in it.
In 2018, Do Kwon and another South Korean entrepreneur, Daniel Shin, co-founded Terraform Labs to develop the Terra blockchain and Luna encryption. The goal of the Terra project is to create a stable encryption that can be widely used online and offline.
The Terra project achieved tremendous success in a short period. In 2021, Terra became the fastest-growing blockchain in terms of locked value, second only to Ethereum. The price of Luna once surpassed 100 dollars, and Do Kwon himself became a billionaire. He was named one of Forbes' 30 Under 30 elites, gaining widespread recognition.
However, the algorithmic stablecoin model of Terra has significant risks. In May 2022, the Terra ecosystem collapsed, and the price of Luna plummeted by 99%, erasing a market value of 40 billion dollars. This crash caused huge losses for investors and triggered a chain reaction in the cryptocurrency market.
After the collapse, Do Kwon faced an investigation from the South Korean prosecutors. He chose to leave South Korea and began a life on the run. The South Korean prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for him and requested INTERPOL to issue a red notice.
Do Kwon denies that he is on the run and claims he is willing to cooperate with the investigation. However, he has not revealed his exact location to this day. From a genius teenager to a billionaire and then to an encryption fugitive, 31-year-old Do Kwon has experienced the ups and downs of life. His story has become a microcosm of the high risks and lack of regulation in the cryptocurrency industry.
