Elon Musk: The wave of AI is coming, and humanity may become a multi-planet species.
Artificial Intelligence and the Future: Insights from Elon Musk
Recently, renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk participated in an AI entrepreneurship school event in San Francisco, sharing his views on artificial intelligence, space exploration, and the future of humanity.
Musk stated that he recently concluded a short-term role in the government sector, considering it merely an "interesting side quest". In contrast, he is more focused on the upcoming AI revolution, likening it to a "tsunami a thousand feet high".
Speaking of AI development, Musk predicts that digital superintelligence may emerge this year or next, at which point it will be smarter than humans in any field. He also forecasts that the number of humanoid robots in the future will be 5 to 10 times that of humans, and the scale of the AI-driven economy could be thousands or even millions of times larger than it is now.
Regarding how to deal with the challenges posed by AI, Musk emphasized that "a strict adherence to the truth" is the most important cornerstone of AI safety. He believes that forcing AI to believe in falsehoods is extremely dangerous.
When talking about xAI, Musk revealed that they are training the Grok 3.5 model, focusing on reasoning capabilities. He also elaborated on how the company has built a large-scale AI training center in a short time, overcoming challenges such as power and cooling.
Regarding the future of humanity, Musk reiterated the importance of becoming a multi-planetary species. He expects that within about 30 years, humanity will be able to transfer enough resources to Mars to make it self-sufficient. This would greatly extend the potential lifespan of civilization or consciousness.
Musk also discussed the progress of the Neuralink project. He stated that while neural connection technology is not essential for solving the problem of digital superintelligence, it can effectively address the bandwidth limitations of input and output between humans and machines. In the future, this technology could not only help people with disabilities but may also greatly enhance human capabilities.
Finally, Musk encourages young tech talents to focus on doing useful things and to be as helpful as possible to their peers. He believes that the pursuit of truth and understanding the nature of the universe is one of the most important directions in AI research.
